The New Zealand Orchid Society Inc.
Promoting the growing of orchids

About Us

The New Zealand Orchid Society is the oldest orchid society in the country. It was formed in 1948 and has been an active participant in the orchid scene ever since. The aim of the society is to promote the enjoyment, understanding, and conservation of orchids both to its members and to the public.

We hold regular monthly meetings; In general these usually take the form of an invited guest speaker to talk on an orchid related subject, or practical sessions on orchid cultivation. As well there are plants for sale from our members at our trading table, and an extensive book library on orchid related subjects from which members may borrow. Plants are also brought in by members for display.

A few years after the club's formation, a judging and award system was introduced, following along internationally accepted lines. These awards are recognised around the world, and our trained judges accepted accordingly, if traveling abroad. We are regularly training new judges, which gives those members a better understanding of orchids in general.

Our members consist of a diverse variety of growers, from beginner right through to commercial growers, and all manner of hobby growers in between. There are a number of experienced growers within the society, some of whom specialise in a particular genus, and they are always willing to assist new growers wanting to branch out into their particular field.
