Orchid Webinars/Videos

Dr Torsten Kleffmann Seminar

Dr Torsten Kleffmann is a researcher at the University of Otago, specialising in proteomics, the large-scale study of proteins using mass spectrometry. While his professional research focuses on the molecular processes within living cells, he also has a long-standing passion for orchids.

The New Zealand Orchid Society was fortunate to have Dr Kleffmann share his scientific knowledge and practical experience as an orchid grower and hobby hybridiser.

In this three-part seminar series, Dr Kleffmann discusses orchid propagation, hybridising and the challenges of maintaining a diverse orchid collection.

  1. Growing Orchids from Seed
  2. Outcome of Hybrid Crosses: Expected or Unexpected
  3. Challenges in Cultivating Complex Orchid Collections
David Woolf Seminar

David comes from a family with a long involvement in orchid growing. He is the son of John Woolf and is associated with Woolf OrchidCulture in Toowoomba.

Woolf OrchidCulture is one of Australia's major orchid nurseries. The nursery produces a broad range of artificially propagated Australian species, exotic species and orchid hybrids.

David has grown a wide range of orchid genera and species over many years. His present focus includes the cultivation and hybridising of Oncidiums and Cattleyas.

  1. Growing Oncidiums Successfully
  2. Growing Cattleyas Successfully
What Do Orchids Eat?

Orchids are autotrophs. They make their own food through photosynthesis, using light, water, and carbon dioxide. Fertiliser supplies minerals, not food.

Orchids need less potassium than most fertilisers provide. Wild orchids grow in low-potassium environments with higher calcium and magnesium levels. Excess potassium blocks the uptake of both. Rick Lockwood cut potassium, added calcium and magnesium, and grew larger leaves, saw fewer pests, and won four AOS awards.

In this video, you learn how low-potassium fertiliser works and how to apply it to your own orchids: What do orchids eat?
