Club Trip to Gellerts Nurseries

A Wonderful Day at Gellert's Nurseries

Fourteen members of the New Zealand Orchid Society were warmly invited by the South Auckland Orchid Society for a guided visit to Gellert’s Nurseries.

The group enjoyed an informative tour through Gellert’s orchid-growing and houseplant sections. Highlights included insights into the nursery's early beginnings and a clear explanation of how they source, propagate, and grow their plants commercially.

We enjoyed the tips shared with us on how to better grow Phalaenopsis orchids. The commentary was both educational and engaging, making it a memorable experience for all.

One of the tips they shared was to grow moth orchids in a clear plastic pot so the roots can photosynthesise. If you use a coloured pot, the roots may grow out of the potting mix as they search for light to carry out photosynthesis.
