Mike Leaity: The Ken Blackman Award
- 26 August 2025
- Greg Barnes
At our AGM last week, we were delighted to present the Ken Blackman Award to Mike Leaity. The award was received by his wife, Leigh, on Mike's behalf.
This award recognises non-executive members who give outstanding service to the club. Many may not know Mike personally, but behind the scenes, he and his wife Leigh dedicate their time to training our Society judges. Mike has worked tirelessly on developing training material, guiding new judges, and keeping our qualified judges sharp (yes, he keeps them on their toes!).
The award itself commemorates the late Ken Blackman, who served the New Zealand Orchid Society with great commitment until his passing in 1979. Although he never joined the executive, Ken worked tirelessly in the background. The plaque reads:
“In memory of Ken Blackman, and awarded annually, to the person whose efforts for, and contributions to, the New Zealand Orchid Society, best exemplify Ken's unselfish involvement over many years.”
Congratulations, Mike, and thank you for all you do to support the Society. Your efforts truly honour the spirit of this award.
