Growing Odontoglossum Orchids in New Zealand

Odontoglossum orchids come from cool mountain areas in Central and South America. They grow well where the air stays cool most of the year. In New Zealand, these orchids suit growers who can give cool temperatures, bright light, and steady moisture. Many modern hybrids sold today follow the same care needs as true Odontoglossum orchids.

Light for Odontoglossum Orchids

Odontoglossum orchids need bright light but not hot sun. In a greenhouse, light should be strong and filtered. Shade may be needed in summer to stop heat build-up.

In the home, an east-facing window is good. A shaded north-facing window can also work. West-facing windows are often too warm.

Leaves should be light green. Dark green leaves can mean not enough light. Yellow or burnt patches show too much sun.

Temperature for Odontoglossum Orchids

Odontoglossum orchids prefer cool conditions.

Day temperatures should stay below 24 to 27 degrees Celsius. Night temperatures are best between 13 and 15 degrees Celsius.

Short warm periods can be tolerated if nights stay cool and air moves freely. In most parts of New Zealand, they grow well in a cool greenhouse or sheltered patio. Warm indoor rooms can stress the plant.

Water for Odontoglossum Orchids

Odontoglossum orchids need regular watering and excellent drainage. The potting mix should start to dry slightly before watering again.

This may mean watering every two to seven days, depending on pot size, mix type, and weather.

Leaves that fold like an accordion can mean not enough water or low humidity. Poor water quality may cause root damage and brown leaf tips. Rainwater or clean water is preferred where possible.

Humidity for Odontoglossum Orchids

Humidity should sit between 40 and 80 percent, with gentle air movement.

In a greenhouse, damp floors or evaporative cooling can help. At home, place the pot on a tray of moist pebbles. The pot should sit above the water level, not in it.

Good air flow is important. Still, damp air can lead to problems.

Fertiliser for Odontoglossum Orchids

Feed Odontoglossum orchids with a balanced fertiliser while they are growing.

Use Superthrive Grow 7-9-5 or Superthrive Orchid-Pro 7-8-6.

Mix at 1 mL to 1.5 mL per litre of water. Feed once a week all year. In winter, feeding may be spaced out longer than one week. This depends on how fast the potting mix dries in cool conditions.

Always water through well so salts do not build up.

Potting Odontoglossum Orchids

Repot when new growth is half mature. In New Zealand this is often in spring or autumn.

Odontoglossum orchids prefer to be slightly underpotted. Leave room for one to two years of new growth. Smaller pots dry more evenly and suit their watering needs.

Use a fine-grade orchid mix with sharp drainage. Because the mix is kept moist, repot every one to two years. Spread roots over fresh mix and firm gently. Keep the plant slightly dry until new roots start.

Insect Control

Common pests include aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects. Check under leaves and along flower spikes. Remove pests early by wiping with a damp cloth or using a suitable treatment. Good air flow helps prevent outbreaks.

Disease Control

Root rot can occur if drainage is poor or if the mix stays wet and cold. Use free-draining media and avoid standing water. Brown leaf tips may be linked to poor water quality or salt build-up. Flush the pot with clean water if needed.
